If you are an "adult" you probably catch yourself periodically reminiscing about some of your favorite cartoon shows that you grew up watching. I know when I was a "kid" my dad would tell me all about the shows he used to watch: Jonny Quest, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Underdog to name a few. When Boomerang came out on Cartoon Network, my dad, brother and I used to watch those shows with him for hours on end. Good times.
Of course my brother and I had our own cartoons that we would watch like Spongebob Squarepants, Dexter's Laboratory, and Ducktales (Woo-Hoo!). We spent some long hours glued to the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network letting the lovable characters fill our minds with fun adventures.
Now that I am "older" and have a child of my own, I think a lot about what her life will be like and things from my childhood that I want her to experience. Cartoons are definitely something I plan on sharing with her and I have no shame in that. In fact here are three reasons it is a good idea for adults to continue to enjoy the cartoons that they love and to share them with future generations.
1. Unplug from Reality and Inspire Imagination: Life is tough, and at times it can be very intense and serious. While it is important that we deal with the serious moments with the appropriate attitude and level of seriousness, it is also important we take some time to unplug and unwind at times, and Cartoons are the perfect escape during these times. Being able t spend a little time in an imaginary and blissful world can be just the medicine we need to deal with the tensions of reality. Also, spending time in a world that is "made up" can inspire us to imagine what our "real world" could be and how we can make it that way.
2. Life Lessons Learned the Easy Way: Our favorite cartoon characters can experience some pretty crazy stuff, some of it real, some of it not so real. But a good cartoon has a lesson in it that the characters, and us, can learn from. Watching cartoons can help impart lessons to kids and adults that we can use in our daily lives.
3. Learning to Laugh: Life is too short not to have fun, but sometime with all of the craziness going on around us, we need to be coaxed into laughing. What better way to learn laugh than by watching a cartoon. And once you learn to laugh at the goofiness that goes on in cartoons, perhaps you will learn to see some of that same goofiness in everyday life, and know that it is okay to laugh at that too.
