Why are we drawn to superheroes? Is it their super powers like flying or super speed? Is it that they are tricked out with awesome gear and secret lairs? It can't be all that spandex right? But what is it? Why are we so enamored by them? Well there may be some underlying reasons why we are drawn to superheroes and look up to them so much.
1. They represent what is good about society: Superheroes stand for the best aspects of humanity, and they are in it for more than just themselves. They aren't afraid of confrontation, but they don't go looking for it either. When there is something that needs to be done, the superhero jumps into the fray and takes care of things.
2. They triumph over evil: Our superheroes don't back down from the bad guy. They take them head on, strategize when necessary, and they always defeat their enemies. This is easier said than done, and they don't win every battle, but you can trust that good will prevail and they will win the war in the long run.
3. They can do amazing things: Superheroes do more than just use their superpowers and gadgets, they put themselves in tough situations when necessary for the sake of those around them. They make the hard decisions and don't stop fighting for what they believe in.
Those are some pretty awesome accomplishments. But think about for a second, for those three things, do you need superpowers or an arsenal of gadgets to do what the superheroes do? (not that I would pass at them, were I offered). No, you can be a superhero right now, and you don't have to save the world from eminent danger either. We can all be heroes in our day to day lives, it is more a state of mind and a choice then it is a type of person.
At work, you can stand up for the right strategic long term strategy, even when other people are backing down and going for short term gain. Be the hero. At school, you can call out the bully who is putting others down. Be the hero. At home you can spend time with your children or younger siblings and teach them the things that they need to know to grow. Be the hero. And when you consistently take advantage of these and other opportunities to do and say what is right, even when it isn't popular, you become the superhero.
In the meantime, show that you are the hero. That you are not going to settle for the status quo. Change your socks...then go out there and change the world! Suit up and be the superhero that this world needs.
